If you watch the LA Clippers’ Blake Griffin, you will be in awe of a young man whose raw power makes him one of the best in-game dunkers currently in the NBA.
Last night, Griffin exploded on the Lakers’ Pau Gasol, using the Spaniard as a launching pad for an awe-inspiring one-hand slam.
The dunk became the latest You Tube sensation. Griffin probably leads NBA.com in video hits for his posterizing slams.
These rim-rattling dunks have made Griffin a box-office smash. Last year, Griffin leaped over a car on his way to a slam dunk title. A car, by the way, the he now endorses.
So, Griffin’s ability to dunk a basketball better and harder than anyone in the game today has made him very famous and very rich very quickly.
But did you also notice the bigger picture?
Yes, the outcome of the game. The Lakers won last night, 113-108, and won the season series over the Clippers, two games to one. That is a cruical distinction come playoff seeding time, as the Lakers and the Clippers battle for the Pacific Division lead.
Despite the marketing, the social media uproar, the endorsement dollars, unless and until Griffin and the Clippers start winning big and make deep runs in the playoffs, here is what a Blake Griffin dunk is really worth:
Two Points.
It’s just another hoop unless your team wins the game. Yes, I applaud the virtuoso performance. But I save my highest praise for the TEAM that wins. And the individuals that get them there.
